Why Clean Metadata?
The Invisible Data Leak
When you take a photo, your camera records much more than just the image. It embeds a hidden layer of data called EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format).
This data is invisible in standard viewers but easily readable by anyone who downloads your file. Common leaks include:
- 📍 GPS Coordinates: Pinpoints your exact home address or location to within 5 meters.
- đź“… Timestamps: Exact day, minute, and second the photo was taken.
- 📸 Device Fingerprint: Camera model, serial number, and software version—unique identifiers that can link anonymous photos to your identity.
Advanced Cleaning
Most basic "remove properties" tools in operating systems miss the deeper data. PNGProtect performs deep-cleaning:
- Thumbnail Stripping: Cameras embed a small preview thumbnail in the file. Even if you crop the main image, the original uncropped thumbnail often remains hidden in the metadata! we remove this.
- Color Profiles: We strip complex ICC color profiles that can sometimes contain identifying tags.
- Anonymization: The final output is a pure pixel stream, re-encoded from scratch to ensure zero data persistence.
